  Well true if the chain is old then a new one may hold up better and longer but I would carry a spare
  master link or two with you on the trails just to be safe.

  You refer to $900 as not too expensive. Well I, like Tony, am old and the bikes I bought my kids were
  under $150 and I know prices are higher now but that seems pretty high for a simple bike.

  I want to lose weight and that is the reason for the bike. On a fixed income so need some direction on
