I was wondering what everyones 1 x 10 set ups were.

I rented a 29er and it was a 3x10, Everything I rode a stayed in the biggest ring(44T). I rode every trail that I usually ride and had no problem climbing or ascending while staying in the big ring.

I was looking at chainrings and cranksets and seems that the largest 1x10 I can find is 38T.
Should I just have my shop build my new bike with a 44T or would 38T be more practical?

I think it's more to your preference. I ride middle more and sometimes the third I don't touch the little ring but I like having the option. If you plan on riding other trails with steeper climbs or plan on staying on your local trail? Weigh your trail riding and go from there

Go with the 38t. One of the advantages of a 1x on a mtn bike is the additional clearance it offers. If you want a 44t, may as well go with two chainrings.
