I have a 1987 Shogun Kaze, a 24'' front wheel funny bike. I updated it around 1992 along with a paint job. Would this be considered a classic? I haven't seen or heard too much about these crazy contraptions. I had pretty good times with mine, including a 58:30 40k and a 10:02 5 mile tt. A friend of mine still has the age group course record at Hawaii Ironman on a Nishiki bike of the same type.

There is a really fast older guy in our bike club that has brought out that exact same bike to a couple of the race night club rides ! I don't know how he can hold that position for 35 miles though with any comfort but he did prove that old school can be fast.

I've seen one with a crazy 60-something big ring. Looking at it, the chainring looked nearly as big as the front wheel. And the guy that rode it was some 6'+ animal. Apparently, he was pretty fast on it too.

Thought I take a pic of bike and custom painted (by me) disc wheel. It has what was our club logo on it. Took it out for a 20 mile jaunt yesterday. My quads hurt.

No huge chainring for me. That's a 54. There is no shifter or cable so the little ring is moot. I have a set of track ring bolts to put on it so I can have just the one ring. I'll leave the derailleur though. I had a bad experience riding without one. Tilted the bars high cause I aint that slim boy that raced that bike. Gonna try to take it out every once in a while and bring wrenches with me to dial in my position.

I filed down a set of chain ring bolts once. What a pain in the butt! You're right, it's best to get the BMX or Track types for $5 and just be done with it. If you have a bench grinder though it's not too hard to make a bash guard or chain guide out of an old ring, as long as it's aluminum and bigger than the one you are using for a drivetrain gear.
