A Metre Matters Awareness Program! A Metre Matters Research from the Department of Transport showed that in 2005-06 4,370 cyclists were seriously injured on Australian roads, with more than 1,500 of these accidents involving a motor vehicle. Whilst there are a number of different causes of these accidents, we know that many of them are due to motorists not providing enough space on the road for cyclists. This is where the A Metre Matters message comes in. Designed to raise awareness of cyclists in the minds of drivers, there has been, and will continue to be, a number of supporting campaigns involved in promoting the A Metre Matters message Check out the very cool t-shirts from Apres Velo supporting the program: MENS We Tread the Same Road - Apres Velo - Live the Ride WOMENS I Need My Space - Apres Velo - Live the Ride ULTRA COOL KIDS Learner Biker - Apres Velo - Live the Ride
It's no better over here. They just resurfaced and re-striped where I live, and I see cars take up the bike lane, as though the lane for cars isn't wide enough.
Certain states/counties/cities have "3 feet 2 pass" laws over here, too. Good concept, but has anybody ever seen that actually enforced? I highly doubt it.
