Before I get chided, yes, I should have looked harder. A lot harder. Worst thing - there is a low dip in the road behind me, so I figure (thinking back) that he must have dropped below the headlights behind him so I didn't even have a chance to spot him against the lights behind him.
Had he hit me, he probably wouldn't have stopped (those are the odds these days). Had he stopped, it is even more likely that no witness would stop (how often do you see people execute THAT civic duty?). And how would it have come out? "Officer, he came right out in front of me..."
