Well my 1st attempt of the year at the Hill I am making my goal to climb this year tuned into a big failure on my 1st attempt.

Here is the ride Henryville Forestry Torture Trail by matts305 at Garmin Connect - Details

However, I used the rest of the time to explore the area. It is a state park not far from home that is quiet, and fairly secluded throughout the week. Lots of fun to ride through as well as it has lots of hills and valleys.

When I make it to the top of that Firetower hill I will explore the rest of the park.:)

Good to have goals. That sucker looks pretty steep if I'm looking at the data right. Any idea what percent grade that thing is?

According to my garmin, the point at which I had to stop and turn was a 33% grade. I did this hill in 3 phases last year on a mtn bike with normal pedals. I am going to have to practice my launch with clipless pedals on a less steep hill before I can attempt to finish this one.

My inexperience with launching from a standstill, in clipless pedals, on an extremely steep hill kept me from attempting to climb in phases.

How do you get a google earth snapshot of the trail to post on here???

The Google earth...
When you are in Garmin training center:
I have a Mac, but it should work mostly the same...
Be sure you have Google earth installed on your computer.

Click on the workout on the left side of the screen under "activities"
Then go to the pull down menu called "View"
Then the 4th choice down is "View data in Google Earth" Click on it.
This next step is a Mac thing, but I am sure Windows does the same thing...
Then hold down the Shift and the command key and press the number 4 key. This will put into screen shot mode. Take the screen shot after highlighting what you want in the pic.
You can also go to File, save as in google earth and save there.
Then you need to have a picture hosting web site to host it. I use Photobucket.
Up load this screen shot pic to tour hosting site
Then click the IMG link to copy and go to this site and paste said link in your message.

To insert a pic from Flikr into your post, click "Share This" above the photo. Then click "Grab the HTML/BBCode". After that, highlight and copy (CTRL C) the text right after SRC= that is similar to this: http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5224/5572112983_6368a7d5f0.jpg

Then in the TwoSpoke message controls click the icon for "Insert Image". Paste the previously copied source code here.

Here is your photo inserted this way.

Okay, hopefully both the route map and elevation chart shows up. This is my 2nd attempt at climbing the biggest/steepest hill around my area. I made it about 100 yds further than last time, and realized that this is a doable goal in so doing. Last time I stopped because I could not muster the strength to turn the pedals. This time I stopped because I got light headed from low oxygen I assume.

After I stopped, I walked as fast as I could up the hill until I felt better, then resumed riding up the last 1/3 of the hill. Overall, I rode 2/3 of the hill and walked 1/3.

The ride down was scary at first, but once I got to about the point I started walking I let go of the brakes and WOO HOOOOOOO! I reached a maximum speed of 44 mph on that descent. Scared but excited at the same time.

My next attempt will be next month.
