EUGENE, OR—Aft er 13 years with
the Burley Design Cooperative, Rob
Templin left to start a cycling tour company
called Second Summer Tours.
Templin describes the company’s adventure
bike tours as focused on “cycling
in exotic locales for the more
experienced cyclist.” Second Summer
Tours also does custom trips for small
groups or businesses.
Templin started Second Summer
Tours earlier this year, and has already
taken a group to Hawaii. Tour riders,
including Pace Sportswear’s president
Jorge Saavedra, pedaled around Maui
and fi nished off days on massage tables
overlooking the ocean.
Mike Kalish from Eugene, Oregon,
had been on 14 cycling tours before
Second Summer’s Hawaii trip; he came
away impressed.
“Of all the tours I have done, this one
had to be my favorite,” Kalish said, adding
that one day of climbing provided
a “challenge and conquest that will be
with me for the rest of my life in a very
satisfying way.”
Templin works with Pete and Joanne
Penseyres—both veterans of long distance
cycling and epic event planning.
For decades Templin and Penseyres
have logged thousands of bike miles a
year in ultra-endurance events. Both
have completed the 3,000-plus-mile
Race Across America solo multiple
More recently, Templin would use
vacation time from Burley to tour the
world on his bike. His multi-week trips
were oft en completed alone and selfsupported,
hauling a Burley trailer.
Next year Second Summer will visit
Argentina, Hawaii and New Zealand.

Confusing press release ...

Hi friends,

Our biz originally evolved as a winter time deal to allow those of us in colder and wetter climates a chance to escape the 'winter blues'. Our website explains in a bit more detail (see below). Destinations like New Zealand, Maui, and Argentina/Chile are a great 'summer' break during the bleak winter months (hence the name 'Second Summer Tours'). Our tours have since expanded to include Oregon in the summer, the Amgen Tour of California (now in May), and our California Dreaming Holiday tour in December.

We're not a big biz but we are passionate about our cycling ... our tours are led as if we're taking friends out for a group spin or epic adventure. We offer some great cycling vacations that attempt to offer riders of all abilities a bit of a challenge in their riding.

Second Summer Tours- Adventure Bicyling Tours and Trips

Rob’s involvement in the cycling community spans more than three decades, ranging from the somewhat traditional (a partner in Burley Design Cooperative for 12 years) to the extreme (four-time Race Across America competitor). He holds a number of long-distance records with tandem partner Pete Penseyres, and has earned a few National Championship jerseys along the way. Rob makes his home in Eugene, Oregon, where the cold and dreary Northwest winters drove him to “discover” exotic locales where it is, indeed, summer in January and February. And that’s the genesis of Second Summer Tours.
