I have a rack that straps on the back of a car trunk. I don't like the possibility of the straps coming loose and bikes falling on the road. I have a car that is old enough that I can drill thru the trunk lid. Are there any designs made from PVC pipes that could make a sturdy permanently mounted bike rack?

Why not just knot the straps? Periodically check them for being tight?

I don't think I would use pvc as it gets brittle. how about a bolt on hitch and a hitch mounted rack, that way you could use the rack on anouther car truck.

Permanent attachment is to avoid exactly that!
Also, I am worried about rack theft.
