Was thinking about a cell phone charger for use while touring and came across a few chargers that use the against the tire dynamo. Had a couple of concerns with this solution: 1. drag created by the dynamo pressing against the tire, and 2. wear on the tire sidewall. I've read about dynamo hubs and looked for them in Google.

I found the Shimano Capreo DH-703 which seemed like it would do the job as power generator. However, I've not been able to find anyone in the US who is carrying this hub. Does anyone know if there are safety issues over and above those of the "old" style dynamo?

Not sure about the specific model you mention but there's a few things to consider such as voltage regulation.

Maybe check out the set up on the Dahon folding bike that uses (I think what is called) BioLogic.

Reach out to Tern folding bicycles, very similar to Dahon, if Dahon can't help you with a source.....

Tern was started by ex-Dahon employees - it's an ugly story.

I saw a hub today that will charge your devices, and you can switch the charger off at the hub for less drag.
