Fearing that I may have performed a tragic riding faux pas, I looked at my big chain ring yesterday while the bike was up on the rack and noticed I had a few broken off tips/ground down teeth. Exactly how does this happen? I know that once while riding I had baggy wind pants on that got caught in the big gear and I had some rough shifts when all went astray prior to the tune up but what exactly do you think went wrong?

The teeth are probably not broken. These teeth with lower tips are shift gates to aid shifting up from smaller rings.
