I'm looking to convert a standard flip flop hub to a fixed gear and multi speed hub set. My question is whether it's possible to keep the derailer on and still use a fixed gear. I want to start taking my bike on some longer rides, but love having the feel of a fixie when I want it.. Anyone tried this?

You can't use a derailleur with a fixed cog, as you need more tension than it can provide.

No worries. You might be able to use an IGH designed for a disc, with a bolt-on cog. I'm just throwing that out there, because I haven't really done the math in my head to see if that would work.

How long are 'longer rides'? There are people who ride century+ distances on their fixed gears you just have to work up to it. I find that while I enjoy riding my multi-speed bikes, I don't miss the gearing options when they aren't there on my fixed gear. YMMV.

I decided that single speed works much better for me than fixed.
