So the schwinn has 26" tires on it. I wanted to fit my knobby 26x2.30 tires on it, however the knobs are way too small for the rim, even though they say 26". so is there another inner diameter size to look for? also, does 2.30 stand for tread width? That's what I always thought.

yes, I even measured them. The tires that came on it also read: 45/571, might that have something to do with it?

the bike is a 64 schwinn typhoon. Can I get 650c in mountain tread?

Schwinns are "special"

If I remember correctly Schwinns in the sixties and the seventies had their own proprietary sizes. It was bigger than the 26" we use today but smaller than the 700c rims Turns out that the 26 is not what it appears to be according to Seldon Brown.

thanks for the site mike! It helped greatly! In the end though I Don't think I'm going to find anything more agressive in 571mm.
