Question:

  • What kind of lock(s) does everyone carry?
  • Does anyone purchase one (or more) U-bolt lock and leave it at the places that one goes to most often?
[*]If so does anyone have them all keyed to the same key?
  • Does anyone use a security cable to secure their saddle to their bike?
  • Has anyone replaced their quick release skewers with lockable skewers?

In the suburbs where I live, most bike theft is by kids doing a grab 'n' run. A simple cable lock works for me. I don't worry about the seat as the seat post clamp needs a hex key. Wheels are secured with standard QR levers.

If I had to leave the bike unattended for long periods of time, e.g. at a commuter train station, or had to leave it in an urban area where bike theft is a profitable career for some, I'd use a cable lock plus U-lock for the frame and wheels for sure.

On Guard U-lock.
Pinhead components locking skewers and head set. (Pinhead is now a division of On Guard)
Seat requires an allen wrench.
