it's the depth of the rim. Unless you are doing time trials or triathlons you should stay away from 88mm and 55mm. You will get blown around in the wind way too much, plus they are heavier and expensive. 32mm would work, light and good aerodynamics. If roads are bad you might want to make sure the wheel will be plenty strong for your weight with the appropriate amount of spokes,etc.
