Fox Valley festival of cycling close pass operation
Our first attempt at doing an op closepass with a large group. The theory was motorists may be likely to behave in inadvisable ways when dealing with groups of cyclists. This meant we only used one police cyclist tucked in with a group of riders and with cameras on to record offences. A motorcyclist stayed ahead of the group in the distance to intercept any close passes and they were then handed on to officers at predetermined stop sites for document and vehicle checks.
The theory that a group of cyclists may result in different types of offences turned out to be correct with two motorists that shouted some incorrect comments out of their rolled down windows who were issued warnings under S59 of the police reform act 2002. If we get complaints of them doing the same thing within 12 months they will have their car seized.
Altogether 10 vehicles stopped for a variety of offences quite a few of which were close passes and bad overtakes (careless driving). All of the people spoken to were informed about what they had done wrong and were issued written advice on how to overtake safely. 2 more vehicles that we didn't stop on the day will be issued NIPs and requirements for driver details.
The cycling volunteers got to see what we do on a close pass op and saw drivers who had caused unnecessary danger pulled in and being dealt with. In just over a year we've gone from our first close pass to having multiple riders to to our first equine close pass to maybe a UK? World? Policing first.
This means we are now able to improve road safety for a diverse group of people. Commuters on their way to work, people out with a mate for a leisure ride or to get fit, and also cycling clubs or enthusiasts. Oh yeah and horse riders (Is horse riding a sport on Strava? Will have to check). All have the right to use the road safely and we now have trialled an operation to protect them by educating all road users on how to share the roads safely and with consideration to others.

We used to have bike cops here and the local police even did away with them, so probably not something we see here in my area.
