Our old Land Rider had a seat post shock. It's basically a spring-loaded seat post, so that when you go over bumps, it absorbs them. Kind of like a less extreme version of a full suspension bike.
I wouldn't say most people have them but it depends on what type of bikes you are referring to. A lot of hybrid/comfort bikes come stock with them now as an added comfort feature. I am pretty sure no mountain bikes or road bikes do though. Really a personal preference. I dont use one and none of the guys i ride with do.
Hopefully they are sturdy because if those come apart I bet there are two pieces of metal to get stuck with (the tube with the spring in it attached to the bottom of the seat, and the piece of metal the tube goes onto coming out of the frame?)
