This will be extremely one sided. It is my view of steve king. I do not like him, that will be apparent. You may disagree with me if you wish, but please keep it respectful.

Bicycle Advocacy and Safety: steve king does not support safe roadways!

Anybody who can write The Shawshank Redemption is OK with me. One of my favorite books. How he thinks outside of literature is of no interest to me.
Politicians for you. Our Governor vetoed a bill that would have made roads safer for cyclists as well. Despite the increase in cyclists deaths the past 10 years.
Judge Judy is fond of saying, "You know how you can tell when a teenager is lying? Their lips are moving."

Others say that about lawyers; most forget that politicians invented lying.

And back-room double-dealing.
And sex scandals.
And taxes.
And oppression.
And the Catholic Church.
And...(enter your pet peeve here)

OK, MOST of those are true, though.

I heard about that earlier this past summer from one of my Twitter followers. If only the legislature in your state could muster up enough votes to override the veto...
I happen to agree with King. This is not a case that should be handled by the federal government. This is a state and county issue. We, as a freedom loving society, need to learn to not rely on the federal government so much. If we want to maintain maximum freedom FROM the federal government we have to at the same time not continuously give it so much power over our lives. And at another level it is important that states remain free from federal law as much as possible in order to maintain state's rights.

Does this mean I do not support biker's safety? Of course not, and it doesn't mean King doesn't either. What it means is we don't need the federal government to decide every single thing for us. With all our country has on it's plate, do I really want they spending precious time on bike safety when my state reps can do it in half the time?

Think globally, act locally.
You may or may not be correct about King. It is not clear at all whether he is for or against cyclist's (and pedestrian's etc) rights.

It is clear he is against the federal government dictating - probably without funding- state and local transportation policies. I totally agree with this.

I believe you have analyzed his response to you with a pretty simplistic point of view and should read a little more carefully.
I also agree with King. Nowhere in that letter does he say he's against cyclist and pedestrian rights. He may be, but that letter is not evidence to support it. I believe in a smaller Federal government and his views, at least from what I can tell in that letter, agree with mine.

If I lived in his jurisdiction, he would have my vote. What I really like is that he didn't try to BS his views to appease a voter - he stated his views knowing they would be unpopular with the recipient.
Let me tell you a few things about king and why so many people, including some of his own constiuents do not like him.

First of all he runs and hides when it comes to people peacefully protest outside of his Sioux City office. He has also taken off out of the back entrance to his office when someone walked in, asking to peacefully talk to him about something they do not agree with. When ever an appt. is made for someone to talk to him and he finds out it is going to be seomthing someone will peacefully confront him, the day of the appointment he disappears and the person is asked to reschedule when they show up at his office.

He refuses to hold or participate in public debates with his opponents when he is campaigning. There was one such incident where a debate was organized by his opponent and his opponents party. All king had to do was show up. He didn't.

king has proven himself time and again to be a coward.

Iowa State Highway 20 which runs from Sioux City to Dubuque is 4 lanes in some areas and only 2 in others. Work and funding has been on going to make it 4 lanes all the way through as it should be. king has claimed he was the only person who obtained the funds to do so and that it is now complete. That is the biggest lie yet. He was NOT the only one involved in the funds that have been obtained for hwy 20 and it is far fomr being 4 lanes all the way through.

You've obviously got issues with him and maybe they're justified, I don't know. Your rants about the man, without independent corroboration, are just that, rants.

So what I do know, assuming his letter is real, is that I agree with his position on this issue.

Sounds pretty typical of politicians.

Q: What the difference between a trampoline and a politician?

A: You take your shoes off to jump on a trampoline.

has nothing to do with the matter being discussed in this thread, imho. You have a bone to pick with him and maybe it's making you biased?
Freemason is this the same dude your having issues with now?

No.

You don't get it and obviously missed the point.

To the others should I explain it to him or leave him hanging?
First, yes I am biased because I am a Democrat and do not agree with king's republican methods and proposals. Second I posted what I did about him to try and convey what his character is like. Bottom line is the man is a coward at facing opponent takes sole credit when there was a lot more people involved in helping with funding for something more than he was.

How does that tie in with his attitude toward the federal govt. requireing the states to impliment this? Well sometimes the states need a little incentive to get something done that will benefit all. In this case the state of Iowa will never impliment this at the rate things are going unless there is an incentive to do so by the fed. govt. king's character and attitude toward this says a lot about him. There are thousands of people in this district who want him out of office, including his own consituents, who are now former supporters of his. He has pissed off a lot of people in this corner of Iowa.
