This must be based on the number of cyclists on the road, rather than a measure of the quality of cycling or cycling infrastructure. Groningen, Netherlands, or perhaps even Rotterdam - for example - appears to have a better / more modern (?) cycling infrastructure than Amsterdam, in my experience (granted I have not been through all of Amsterdam).

And while Amsterdam may have the most cycles, Copenhagen has been reported to have the most cycles *in use on a daily basis* - atleast 400,000 cyclists going into and out of the city daily.

Sounds more like this info was based on articles like http://uk.askmen.com/top_10/travel/top-10-bicycle-friendly-cities_10.html. And that appears to be based on a 2 year old article.

Other searches on the net list Dublin to be in the top ten as of September 2011, and Minneapolis, Minnesota as the best in the U.S. Several people who live in Curitiba, Brazil have balked at it being listed at all!

As with all 'surveys' that get copied and pasted from the net, you should take the results with a grain of salt. I suspect there are personal bests and worsts around the globe, and a city that is good for upright bikes may not be practical for velomobiles, or cargo-bikes - and vice-versa.

"Your mileage may vary" is worth keeping in mind. :)

I agree! When i saw "The world "s 10 greatest cycling cities", i found Beijing in top ten greatest cities, I feel weird, Beijing is too heavy with traffic, and that 40% Amsterdam residents riding bike to work, i think that is why it say Amsterdam is the greatest cycling city

I found Dublin to be a tough city in which to bike. It had a remarkable amount of swirling traffic that was somewhat conscious of cyclist. Phoenix Park - in the city - was fantastic, but small as a biking venue. And the Wicklow Mountains just south of the city were absolutely gorgeous! Amsterdam wasn't great - again it was a big city with loads of vehicles, but just about everywhere outside of Amsterdam was dream-cycling... if you don't mind perpetual flatness! I would have to say my favorite to date is Capetown, S.A. with its near perfect roads, huge bicycle following, and SPECTACULAR vistas. Rodale Press even has a S.A. version of BIcycling Magazine there. The worlds largest bike race happens in Capetown in March- we even got to ride with Miguel Indurain, though he was much farther ahead of us!!

Due to the pollution I wouldn't ride a bike in Beijing China if you paid me! The very mention of China's number one city just stinks (pun intended) with political correctness. Don't get me wrong, I've been there, it's a nice place to go, and the people are very warm and friendly, but the pollution is bad, you would not want to be deeply inhaling that air...actually, I wish I hadn't inhaled it all!
