I had a great time riding my road bike this year but I want to do some riding on gravel trails. The tires I had were 700 21C and I couldn't keep myself upright on loose gravel. How large a tire can I fit on 700 C rims and would they be OK for gravel and dirt?

Thanks,

CVGreg

It depends on the width of the wheel rim. Several web sites discuss tire sizes and have charts showing which tire widths fit which rim widths. Two good ones are:

Sheldon Brown: Tire Sizing Systems

Schwalbe Tire: Tire Dimensions | Schwalbe North America

You could probably go to 25mm or maybe 32mm, but check the rim width and the charts to be sure.
