i just started riding with i road bike club this year ,and notice that no one in the club had tube caps or nuts on their wheels.did not ask,in fear of looking like a newb.can some one tell me why.

Don't need them, I do use caps to keep trash out of the stem

Presta valves basically have their own cap, you have to unscrew it anyway. The nut makes it a bit easier when filling the tube after a replacement, but not needed. I usually lose the caps anyway.

Caps are good for protecting the tube from being punctured while packaged and when you have your spare in your seat bag or jersey pocket. Other than that not needed IMO...

The less rotating weight, the better. I've gained 2-3 MPH average on my longer rides because I've save 2 grams/wheel.:p
