You can learn a lot about someone by what they purchase.

Hey i12ride, question for you: after I bought my fat bike last year, you made a comment on wet brake pad noise and recommended a brand of pads which does not shriek when wet. I should have paid more attention at the time. Naturally can't find the post, now that I understand I very much need these pads. Any chance of a repeat of your recommendation for wet/dry disc brake pads for my Surly Ice Cream Truck? Thanks in advance. The stock pads totally work, but are scary loud when wet.
Thanks I'll definitely post updates. Right now just putting together a parts list likely be starting to clean it up this week on my days off

here ya go....i'm running the blue pads. seems like overkill based on them being for mtb and downhill but since the fat tire and plus have larger tires i went with them. read up on all their offerings here.....

Sweet! Thanks, man. I appreciate the info.
they sell on ebay too. can't remember if free shipping on ebay was any cheaper than straight off their website and adding shipping. there site does have much better info and specifics about each different type of pad they offer of course. i think first set and some new rotors came from ebay but 2nd set for diff bike was just thru their site.

I actually have a ride up Pike's Peak coming up: 4k feet of ascent over 20mi. Then you go back down, of course. I'm liking the sound of the Blue DH pads for that ride in particular. How is the lever feel? I've read that some DH pads have poor performance until they're warmed up. Not an issue for Pike's of course, but I'd like something that performs well in non-extreme conditions, too.

Also, I want pads that don't shriek like a [email protected] soul the moment they get even slightly damp, lol. I think you've already addressed that one.
I have had nothing but silent solid stopping and no lever issues on either bike these are on. Both are hydraulic discs, one with shimano one with sram so both types of fluid.

Perfect. Thank you for the confirmation and recommendation.

Back to the purchasing! Here is Mrs. Newleaf's Wolf Tooth Double Bottle Mount. We are still awaiting the B-Rad base.

Correction: I previously believed the Double Bottle Mount does not require the use of a B-rad base, but the company's literature shows I was mistaken. Good thing I'd already ordered a base for reasons relating to the adjustment of the bottles' mounting position.
Font Material property Electric blue Transparency Packaging and labeling
Depending on the length of the B-Rad base, they run ~$10-30. The Double Bottle Mount is ~$25. Longer B-Rad bases allow for progressively larger shifts in the water bottles' mounting points. They can also allow for the mounting of other accessories above or below the bottles.

I love the dual bottles on my fat bike and am considering a second doubler setup for the bottom bottle mount. I'd previously thought to put an Anything-type cage down there for a 32oz/900ml Nalgene, but a pair of 620ml bottles such as I already have adds up and converts to 42oz.

That isn't much more than a 32oz Nalgene, but I'll almost always opt for greater water capacity over lesser. Just because you have it doesn't mean you have to use it.

With the existing setup, I'd end up with 84oz of on-bike water capacity. That's close to the amount of water I need to complete a self-supported metric century. Add the 100oz Camelbak I'm still trying to avoid and now we're talking water for riding and camping, too. That also leaves the fork triple mounts available for yet more water or other gear.

A while back, Mrs. Newleaf bought a couple of hanks of artisinal alpaca yarn. Then she bought a winder and an Amish swift to turn the hanks into proper yarn balls.

In cycling terms, this is like a talented MTB rider learning to manual for the first time. She is really good at crochet these days, but this was the first time she's tried going from hank to yarn ball. Much like a manual, that process is actually more complicated and involved than it sounds.

Halfway into the project, our rescue golden retriever Miss Daisy found it. She likes to eat soft things. Some yarn was lost, along with that iteration of the project. The yarn loss meant that the whole pattern had to change, but Mrs. Newleaf is nothing if not adaptable and found an alternative.

The completed hat matches my helmet wonderfully and fits beneath it with room to add a balaclava if needed. It is likely I will also wear it off the bike, too :D.

The color-matched poles are scientifically proven to lessen drag… it’s a drag when your poles don’t match your skis

I vote we let Mr. New leaf slide on the hat (gift, not purchase) because the hat is cool, the dog is a golden retriever And a rescue, and because obviously his wife is a force for good

Found a sale! For $16, I completed my yellow jersey/shoes/gloves kit.

Next come the Mr. Spock gloves . Technically they are known as lobster claws, but I kind like the former term better :D.
View attachment 55967 they look strange but feel warm, and I've always loved the idea of semi-mittens. $55 on an after season sale.
I always thought I would end up with a pair of those crab claw mittens, but for Christmas I always get regular gloves, so I’ve never purchased any.
You’ll have to let me know how those work out for you.

Thank you, I will. I have not yet had occasion to wear them in action. I imagine that will change before the heat hits, but the way the weather has been of late, there's no telling.

I bought a pair of lobster claw gloves last year. They work better than gloves. I found it hard to decide before the ride which I was going to wear. You start with gloves and ten miles out you wish you had the lobsters or ten miles out you feel they are overkill and wish you had just worn gloves. Now I carry one or the other in my rack bag as well as a balaclava. My nose and ears get so cold it takes the fun out of the ride.
